To be convinced

A few years back I started following a great woman's daily newsletter. She's a book publisher that also holds author writing classes. On top of that, for free, she gave away small tips and challenges to anyone wanting to participate.

I found this woman, Ann Ljungberg, through a swedish social network called Shortcut. At the time I studied project management and only had writing as a hobby. Since Shortcut focuses on helping people onwards in their careers, I stopped using it when I found my job. And Ann stopped sending her newsletter - because, of course, she started focusing on her blog and her core business :D Alas I lost the inspiration that Ann's sendouts had been - and as life goes, I got used to it and didn't think much of it.

Until yesterday! Being the book buff that I am, I'm following a lot of book publishers on Twitter, and suddenly @Piratforlaget said something to @AnnLjungberg! And here I am, today, answering her challenge... :-)

I'm now convinced that Twitter does good - despite most people displaying a not-so-mild skepticism - because not only does it help me find info about SEO and other online marketing related subject, it also put me in contact with Ann, once again - now that writing is a big part of what I do all day!

The web definitely gives us new writing challenges regarding style and expression, but for me it also embodies the chance to evolve and grow my capabilities as a copy writer - without loosing track of what writing "used" to be about!

Your PPC sucks - or is it suddenly great?!

Humor is always much appreciated by me, and with the work I do there is a lot to be said for the humor on the YourPPCSucks site!

Whenever I feel like a neanderthal for creating my ads manually, I can always rely on that site to pick me up ;-)

And it inspires me to have some fun.. like this

I hope that it's just a broad-match-gone-bad and that ThePrivateEquityMaster doesn't ACTUALLY sell meth!!

But...something is wrong with the PPC universe :S Either the world started to only add GREAT PPC - or YourPPCSucks has grown tired of exposing automated crappy ads from Ebay and Amazon... Non of it highly likely, so WHERE are you?!

Show me love

Watched an old concert with Robyn on TV tonight. It was shot in L.A. Seems unreal somehow, that Robyn, only 2 years older than me, and from Stockholm would be touring the world singing the songs she releases through her own record label.

I'm always amazed by people who make it. And normally I don't particulary care if it's pure marketing or pure genius that is the reason... Even if I do WANT to admire genuin people more, I tend to have a hard time getting past admiring a fake person that is a genius marketer ;-)

Robyn of course, is the real deal! (I hope...) She was discovered in the early 90's and made into a product... BUT, she decided she was more than a singer. So she started her own record label, since the one she had wanted to call the shots on what music she would make.
And it seems she made a smart choice, which probably means she could go to any record label and get the EXACT music she wanted, produced. That is authority built on pure genius :)

Moving is opening my eyes for SEO

The last month have been all BUT productive... as far as blogging is considered.
On the other hand, I've been painting windows, building Ikea furniture AND trying to Google stuff I think I want.

All this Googleing has made me realize - Swedish interior shops have some CRAPPY SEO! :P
I hate directories (I know, I shouldn't, it's SEO) - I just hate going through stuff that only gives you half the info you want.

There is one shop, however, that seems to show up on almost every search I make - www.grevinnansbutik.se - really cool stuff, but FAR from cheap! They are using meta keywords - which really shouldn't make a difference, right?
They're also using descriptions, and titles, although I wouldn't call them unique.

So, is this proof of how bad SEO is in Sweden? Or evidence that Google acutally doesn't care that much about the page content correlating with description? Or even - are they still using meta keywords to index sites? what happened to ignoring it due to keyword stuffing? Only rumors?

Personal brand or brands - that is the question

Sometimes I actually get a chance to read some of those articles I've bookmarked as "Read later". These are mostly tips from Twitter, and blogs that have not yet earned a place on my Google Reader. But it can also be pages that I already have on RSS, bookmarked, on one of my numerous post-its (yes, I do still use pen and paper...a LOT)

One of those pages are from MediaPost on how to Optimize your personal brand.

A valid point from that post is:
"A lack of personal optimization can be a serious disadvantage in a down economy."

but I also read somewhere about the discrepancy between a strong personal brand and the company brand - which one should take a step back for the other? (lets leave that for another post)

Then we have the question of WHAT to optimize for.
I'm present on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Xing, a couple of business specific communities. I write this blog, and I write for our company blog and I network in "the real world" (some of which ends up online). You get the point!

Frankly, I'm not at all convinced I'd want all of these interlinked. I try to "be myself" within all of these networks, but still I'm not sure if ppl looking at my LinkedIn profile should have access to my vaccation photos. Or that ppl reading our company blog should have easy access to my questions on Google Help Forum.

And there is also NO WAY for me to optimize my output, since I use internet all day, every day, for friends, for work, for smart ass posts like this one and for dumb questions.. and for, well, you name it. :P

I think my take on the matter is quite simple:
Be honest. Everything you "say" CAN be found!
Reward loyalty. My followers on Twitter knows when I've written a new blog post, as do visitors to my LinkedIn profile. And you guys, just got the links to all my online presence...
Be clear on your objective. I'm restrictive with adding Facebook friends, because that is my "inner" personality, and it's not always suited for business (you know,
sometimes I whine ;-) )
And I think twice before I air my views on the company blog.

What's your take on personal brands in general or optimizing them in particular?!

The tooting of horns...

Okey, I'm about 6 months into this webanalytics/SearchEngineMarketing/Optimazation business... And I love it! I do - it's marketing! And it's hilarious - as you will find out if you visit YourPPCSucks That guy is a genius, and I'm scared to ever come close to ending up on that site :) In the meantime it makes me feel good about the ad copy I produce - hey, at least I'm smarter than a software ;)

I found YourPPCSucks on Twitter. There are many great things to find on Twitter - don't even try to tell me otherwise. I also found TheDaveCollins, and it turns out I could learn from his blog! There is also a lot of less great things on Twitter, but let's just ignore those.

Twitter can, amongst other things, be used to toot your own horn, and who wouldn't want to do that! I got to toot a bit for SurveyPirate yesterday when we lanched CSV-reports and Preview function of the survey tool. And I'll toot the fact that I'm writing for the SurveyPirate blog - the PirateUniversity part, designed to teach you great stuff ;-)

Oh dear, snow?!

It's almost march...and it started snowing. You really gotta love Stockholm! If it's not snowing, the snow is melting away during the day and freezing during the night turning Stockholm into a city sized ice rink!

If you've never been to Stockholm, don't go - at least not between september and april! Seriously, the city gets paralyzed at the sign of snow, and there is a immediate risk of just that! This morning I waited for the bus, took about 12 minutes, then one came and I took it...
turns out the next one came 1 minute later...
Why? It's not that we have a laid back view on time in Sweden, it's because it's been snowing for about 36 hours! Oh, and halfway the bus almost got stuck in the snow...that when I realized there was another bus just behind us - because it was now just infront of the bus I was in, the one that was stuck in the snow!

So let's recap:
Sept-Apr = Snow in Stockholm
Snow in Stockholm = chaos
Sept-Apr in Stockholm = Chaos...

But you're welcome during May-Aug! ;-)
